Job description

The Ant Broads & Marshes SSSI, which is part of the Broads SAC, is facing significant water pressures with the climate emergency forecast to increase pressure on water supplies in the future. The Environment Agency (EA) is England’s environmental regulator, and it is our duty to ensure that water supplies are sustainable for the future. The Ant Broads & Marshes Restoring Sustainable Abstraction (RSA) investigation has concluded that a series of changes to abstraction licences are required to protect and restore these European designated sites.

We are now commencing these changes and are looking for a Water Resources Officer who has experience of water resources, planning and the legislation surrounding abstraction and abstraction licencing. In this role you will gain experience of developing and implementing sustainable abstraction proposals across unique environments and within designated European sites in East Anglia.

Working closely with senior members of the project team and other departments, you will be responsible for the following:

•Overview of all licensing activity associated with the project.
•Responding to and providing technical support for customer enquiries.
•Assessing new abstraction proposals in collaboration with external partners and internal teams.
•Providing technical input to the development of Abstraction Licensing Strategies (ALS).

The team

Reporting to the Water Resources Programme Manager, the role sits in a dedicated Project Team focussing on water resources and abstraction pressure across Broadlands within the geography of our East Anglia Area. The team work collaboratively across internal teams and departments within the Environment Agency and partner organisations, to coordinate and deliver a programme of licence changes and provide dedicated resource and specialist expertise to abstraction licence holders and stakeholders.

Experience/skills required

We are seeking an individual with a degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant environmental discipline. This will be coupled with practical knowledge and understanding that will give you a platform to quickly become an effective Water Resources Officer.

Relevant work experience in abstraction licensing, planning, permitting or water resources would be an advantage, however being able to demonstrate the following skills is what is most important:

•A broad range of technical knowledge, and experience of delivering environmental improvements using a range of evidence and tools.
•A confident communicator used to influencing and negotiating to deliver outcomes.
•Knowledge of developing regulatory documentation e.g. Section 52 notices and licensing strategies.
•Being proactive, self-motivated and have strong team working skills to deliver the best outcomes for the environment.
•Good organisational skills to manage multiple priorities and competing demands,
•Working & communicating with a range of colleagues, managers, customers and partners.

Whilst proximity to East Anglia Area is preferable, the location is flexible and working remotely is the norm.
