About the College/Unit/DepartmentThe College of Engineering at the University of Georgia is one of the fastest growing programs at UGA and one of the fastest growing public colleges of engineering in the nation. Since our founding in 2012, enrollment in the College of Engineering has grown to over 2,400 students. The UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is a multidisciplinary research and teaching institution located on Skidaway Island near Savannah. Located on a 700-acre coastal campus with heavy equipment and strong trades support, the Institute provides space and opportunity to deploy experimental infrastructure.  The Institute was founded in 1968 with a mission to conduct research in all fields of oceanography. In 2013, the institute was merged with the University of Georgia and added graduate education to its mission. The campus serves as a gateway to coastal and marine environments for programs throughout the University System and region. The Institute’s primary goals are to further understanding of marine and environmental processes, conduct leading-edge research on coastal and marine systems, and train tomorrow’s scientists.

Duties/ResponsibilitiesDeveloping and using real-time sensors and control systems to monitor natural infrastructure installations/testbeds including stormwater systems, living shorelines, and marshes.

Position SummaryThe College of Engineering wishes to appoint a Post-Doctoral Scholar to work on a grant funded research project: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Engineering with Nature Initiative for a period of 1 year with additional employment dependent on the needs of the project. In this role they will be work under the direct supervision of Dr. C. Brock Woodson, Associate Professor, and Associate Director for Engineering and Natural Science, Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems, at the College of Engineering’s School of Environmental, Civil, Agricultural and Mechanical Engineering (ECAM). This invitation is for the candidate to join a multidisciplinary team of scientists at the University of Georgia who are engaged in a cooperative research project between the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center. This position can be based at either the main campus in Athens, GA, or at UGA’s Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, in Savannah, GA.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in PositionThis project is highly specialized due to the incorporation of nature-based systems. Candidates should have a PhD in hydrology, water resources engineering, coastal engineering, or related field; and are expected to have a demonstrated high level of expertise in developing monitoring techniques and tools. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate the ability and commitment to thrive in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment and the ability to conceptualize and implement high quality/high impact engineering research projects. In addition, applicants showing a demonstrated interest in working across disciplinary boundaries at the upland-aquatic interface to examine the physical responses of nature-based systems to coastal environments will be given preference.
