Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) invites applications for a position as Research and Education fellow within the Center for Remote Sensing Applications (CRSA).
The position is part of the UM6P-MIT partnership within the “AFRICAN GEOSPATIAL DATA PORTAL FRAMEWORKS FOR SCIENCE, CAPACITY-BUILDING AND DECISION-MAKING PURPOSES” project. The successful candidate will participate in an interdisciplinary research project entitled “Assessment of droughts occurrence and recovery on African Landscape”.
We are seeking a young postdoctoral scientist with expertise in microwave remote sensing for the estimation of surface soil moisture, energy balance modeling and radiative transfer modeling. The goal of the research that will be carried out by the candidate is to quantify drought using a number of indices that have been developed and selecting the relevant indices for each drought type (meteorological, ecological, hydrological and hydrogeological droughts). In this frame, different indices provided in the literature should be tested. For each drought type, different satellite missions will be used such as GPM, CHRIPS, TRMM, SMAP, SMOS, MODIS, SEVERI and GRACE to identify each drought type using the most relevant remotely sensed indices.

Key duties :

The specific responsibilities and tasks of the successful candidate will include :
* Conducting scientific research in the field of microwave remote sensing as part of the project team,
* Coauthoring manuscripts and scientific reports and publishing findings in high impact academic journals of the field,
* Presenting research results and scientific outcomes to stakeholders and at scientific meetings and conferences,
* Supervising and teaching master and PhD students in remote sensing and working closely with postdoctoral fellows,
* disseminating research outcomes to stakeholders, Contribute to teaching or other (if applicable)
Development of research proposals,
Contribute to the training activities and the development of new remote sensing courses/programs,
Collaborate with other UM6P researchers/groups on multidisciplinary research projects related to remote sensing,Desired skills and experienceCriteria of the candidate :   

This position is open to individuals with:
* Experience of at least two years of postdoctoral research fellow with a good record of publications in the field of remote sensing applications for earth surface and water resources in arid and semi-arid regions and with specialty in data processing and remote sensing competencies (radar, optical and thermal),
Experience in the use of remote sensing data, especially of soil moisture from both passive and active sensors,
Expertise in micrometeorology or soil-plant-atmosphere exchange modeling and have knowledge of microwave remote sensing of continental surfaces especially in arid and semi-arid area,
Experience with radiative transfer modeling, multispectral data analysis and biophysical parameters retrieval algorithm development, using multi-scale, multi-spectral and multi-sensor satellite.
Experience with surface energy/water balance model for simultaneous estimation of water stress and conducting an assessment of different evapotranspiration and crop water requirement algorithms for irrigation management,
Ability to conduct field experiments at various national and potentially international locations,
Interdisciplinary thinking and good communicational skills.
Enthusiasm towards generating new ideas and passion for solving challenging problems that require complex creative solutions.

Skills :

The appointee will be expected to demonstrate competency and relevant skills in the following areas:
* Surface biophysical properties inversion,
* Surface soil moisture estimation at high resolution,
* Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) or Image Processing,
* Good understanding of signal processing theory & methods,
* Multi-spectral/multi-resolution remote sensing analysis,
* Land surface and hydrological modelling,
* Strong programming skills (Python, Matlab, R or similar),
* A good standard of written and spoken French and English

The research aims to improve our understanding of the integrated functioning of continental surfaces and their interaction with climate and humans, with emphasis on sustainable management of natural resources (soil, land, water, agriculture) in the context of Climate Change. One of center’s goals is to provide a set of services and operational products to users (local, national and international) that aid in the decision support of water and food systems.
