The Watershed Sustainability Lab in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of South Florida in Tampa (USF) is seeking one postdoctoral researcher to work on an project titled “Coupling lake, watershed, and estuarine models to better understand the role of engineered freshwater discharges in driving the severity, location, and timing of harmful algal blooms.” This project is a collaboration with University of Florida’s Center for Coastal Solutions and funded by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
The overarching goal of the project is to develop data- and model-driven guidance for Lake Okeechobee releases and Caloosahatchee River watershed management based on an improved understanding of the interactive effects of engineered discharges, watershed flow and nutrient deliveries, phytoplankton community dynamics, and river/near-shore hydrodynamics. The successful applicant will be expected to integrate hydrodynamic-water quality simulation models with optimization tools, in order to forecast water flows and pollution loads from Lake Okeechobee. The postdoc will work closely with collaborators at USF and UF, will assist in project management, mentor a diverse group of graduate and undergraduate students, and support submission of new funding proposals.
