(2) Program Name: Drinking Water Program

Location: Boston (remote/hybrid)

Proposed Duration: January – April 2022

Because MassDEP is presently working remotely, candidates will work remotely, until staff return to the office. Candidates will need a computer with Windows 10 and Office suite and will be expected to work on their own computers.  Candidates will also need to have internet access as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection may be provided.

Project Description

The intern will assist Drinking Water Program staff with project tasks that support the goals of Safe Drinking Water Act.

Description of Intern Duties

  • Assist staff with creating and updating GIS layers for lead service lines, water supply treatment plants and other drinking water supply related data layers.
  • Review well driller Well Completion Reports for accuracy. Use GIS data to verify private well location with the municipal property information and the data from the Well Completion Reports
  • Participate in field work associated with new source approvals, wastewater discharge, and tributary work.
  • Assist staff with developing public outreach materials for the Lead and Copper Rule and the Well Drillers Program.
  • The Intern will work in two to three technical drinking water areas to enhance the ‘real work’ experience.

Knowledge and Skills needed

Basic knowledge of GIS.  Research skills. Knowledge of Excel and/or Access helpful.

  • Be enrolled in a degree program in the Spring 2021; or
  • Have received their degree within one year of their date of graduation

This is an intern contracted position for 22.5 hours per week

$20.00 an hour/undergrad degree

$25.00 an hour/graduate degree

Employees must have the ability to commute to MassDEP Massachusetts locations.
