Do you want to be part of a team helping people understand and adapt to climate change? The Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy sets 3 long term ambitions to address flood risk and the challenge of climate change. This role will help us turn National ambitions into local projects. This will involve keeping up to date with legislation, evidence and policy and working with colleagues and partners to change ways of working that reflect this challenging subject.
The technical advisor will be part of a local and National network of flood risk management advisors and specialists. They will lead on projects and work collaboratively to help deliver flood risk outcomes. They will work closely with lead local flood authorities and partners to ensure we continue to improve flood risk knowledge as well as working with communities to raise awareness and implement change. We encourage innovation and research to identify novel ways to address flood risk including by securing funding.
As part of a team with various responsibilities you will show leadership and help develop skills and capabilities in the team so we can all focus on better outcomes for people and places.

The team

The teams are responsible for identifying flood risk management schemes and providing flood risk advice, whether for planning applications or flood risk management projects. Effective relationships with partners and customers are essential to influence flood risk and environmental outcomes.

Experience/skills required

You will be passionate about your work and confident to use your knowledge and initiative to motivate others and achieve sustainable outcomes in flood risk management. You will have experience of leadership and successful delivery of projects. Good communication skills across a range of stakeholders is essential.
You’ll be qualified to degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or science discipline. Most important is your energy, enthusiasm and willingness to learn and innovate.
You’ll have real desire and enthusiasm to build relationships with our customers and internal teams to ensure we achieve our goal of helping people and property be more resilient to flooding.

Knowledge of some / all of the following are desirable:
• development and planning;
• flood risk legislation;
• river processes, hydrology and the management of flood risk;
• working with partners and customers;
• engineering principles;
• programming and project management.

You will need to be able to travel to meetings, sometimes in remote locations. Occasional weekend and evening work may be required.
You will be required to support our incident management duties.
Contracted hours are 37 hours a week on a full time basis. These posts will be based at our office in Welwyn Garden City, a short walk from the train station and the town centre. We are moving towards a mix of office and home working, determined by the type of work, meetings and the need to collaborate with colleagues
