Policy Officer (Coastal and Maritime Economy)

Under the supervision of the ocean programme director and in close collaboration with the ocean team, the successful candidate will: 

  • Lead the ocean team’s activities towards more influence on the private sector and the economic drivers affecting marine policy; 
  • Contribute to the strategic development of the ocean programme, bringing innovative ideas, relevant networks and work methods/culture; 
  • Participate in the development of new projects, from design to implementation, including the search for funding and partners; 
  • Contribute to the coordination of a 4-year multi-stakeholder project on sustainable marine and coastal tourism; 
  • As required, support the Ocean team in the implementation of ongoing projects, especially on high seas and regional ocean governance. 

To that purpose, typical think tank activities include: 

  • Producing reports, notes and policy briefs for decision-makers, as well as project deliverables, including events such as workshops and webinars;
  • Coordinating with projects partners, including on reporting processes;
  • Participating in relevant international meetings and conferences;
  • Presenting and publicizing the results of IDDRI’s work, in cooperation with the Communication team and partners, to a diverse range of stakeholders (international organisations, government agencies, the private sector, NGOs, the media etc.); 
  • Contributing to fundraising activities. 

Required qualifications

The successful candidate will:

  • Have at least 5-7 years of relevant work experience in: 
    – Influencing business policies/practices and public policies
    – Using economic and business analysis to craft and execute influence strategies
    – Developing or contributing to a strategy at an NGO, think tank or similar bodies 
    – Coordinating multi-stakeholder projects 
  • Have a master’s degree or doctorate in a relevant field, e.g. economics, environmental economics, business administration; 
  • Have experience in facilitating multi-stakeholder meetings; 
  • Be fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

In addition, the following attributes would be an advantage:

  • Good knowledge and understanding of the international and regional frameworks and processes related to the governance of the Ocean; 
  • Work experience in Africa and/or Asia; 
  • Proficiency in French and/or Spanish (C1+); knowledge of other UN languages. 

Location and contract

The successful candidate will be offered a 24-month contract based at IDDRI’s offices in the heart of Paris, which could lead to a permanent contract depending on the evolution of IDDRI’s funding and strategic programming. 

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, determined in accordance with IDDRI’s established rules and regulations (+/- 41k€).
