Under the direction of project principal investigators, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing a large, 5-year project that is national in scope and will be coordinated through multiple partners across the U.S. The project is funded by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The project will develop a monitoring and assessment framework aimed at evaluating the long-term effectiveness of wetland construction and restoration efforts supported through the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program – Wetland Reserve Easements (ACEP-WRE) program (formerly the Wetlands Reserve Program). This position has diverse duties and responsibilities and will provide candidates with an ideal opportunity for extensive networking and later career advancement. This position is a 12-month, 100% research position that is grant-funded for at least 5 years. Position is open until filled, with negotiable starting date. The listed salary is a maximum.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
A degree (MS required, PhD preferred) in wetland science, fisheries, wildlife, natural resources, ecology, environmental science, or a closely related field. Note: PhD candidates who have successfully defended their dissertations will be considered as PhD level.
Preferred Qualifications:
Interdisciplinary background in wetland science, including experience with wetland ecology, delineation, restoration, and/or watershed management in rural, urban, and/or wildland settings.
Specialized programming skills (e.g., R, SAS, STATA, ArcGIS, etc.), and analytical skills (e.g., spatial analyses, univariate and multivariate statistics, etc.).
Specific background could emphasize aquatic biota, plants, hydrology, water quality, and/or nutrient dynamics.
Knowledge of NRCS’ Agricultural Conservation Easement Program – Wetland Reserve Easements program and/or EPA’s National Wetland Condition and Assessment (NWCA) protocols and associated indicators is desired.
Experience with diverse types of aquatic field and laboratory work is required, as well as experience with field trucks, boats, trailers, electrofishing, and other biological sampling gears.
Experience with compiling and managing large datasets, with numerous water quality, nutrient, sediment, hydrologic, biological, and/or landscape variables important to wetland structure and function collected across different geographic regions.
Demonstration of good organizational and communication skills, creativity, and understanding of experimental design. Experience with diverse statistical analyses are required.
Demonstration of presenting original research at local, regional, national, and/or possibly international meetings, while also writing and publishing peer-reviewed publications.
Successful candidate will be a conscientious individual who has a keen interest in wetlands and solving problems, and enjoys working as part of a large team of researchers from across the U.S.
Successful candidate must be able to develop effective working relationships with the principal investigators, students, NRCS personnel, state conservationists, personnel at partner institutions, private landowners, and other stakeholder groups involved with this project.
Ability to train new graduate students and mentoring undergraduate student workers as needed.
