Background Information - Job-specific

The Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity of Ethiopia is a federal organization established to undertake the management of water resources, water supply and sanitation, large and medium scale irrigation and electricity. As part of the ambitious targets of GTP-II and Ethiopia’s vision 2015, Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity (MoWIE) is developing a program that compensate the gap of meeting the GTP-II so far, advance the immediately needed further development, including new and innovative new way of doing the business.

The objective of this project is to provide technical support to the minister and state ministers of MoWIE to improve the decision making power of the ministers hereby meeting the GTPII targets assigned to the ministry.

Specific objective

Specific objective of the project

  • Develop national standards in water resource management
  • Formulate legal frame works, policies and guides relevant to water resource management
  • Build capacity of professionals in the field of water resource, irrigation and land management
  • Develop comprehensive information management system

Functional Responsibilities

  • Effective technical assistance in cropping, cropping calendar, irrigation methods, weeds, pest and disease control
  • Study cropping patterns and intensities taking into account the soil quality, climatic conditions and crop water requirements
  • Estimating  crop water requirements, designing cropping patters and cropping intensities in the project
  • Propose cropping patterns and intensities taking into account the soil quality, climatic conditions and crop water requirements
  • Investigate existing irrigation method and assess validity of those methods for sustainable exploitation and rechargeable management of ground water.
  • Coordinate the cropping calendar with the involvement of all relevant stakeholders through national workshops and dialogue.
  • Involve in the assessment and research towards suitable cropping patterns and climate smart agricultural practices.
  • Involve and contribute in the national level policies and guidelines preparation on weeds, pest and dieses control.
  • Investigate existing irrigation method and assess validity of those methods develop policy supporting regulations, directives and guidelines for sustainable  exploitation and rechargeable management of ground water
  • Propose suitable cropping patterns and climate smart agricultural practices
  • Provide input for economic and financial analysis of the Project and core sub project

Education

  • Masters Degree in Agricultural and Irrigation Engineering, Agronomy or related field.
  • Bachelor degree in the same fields with additional two years relevant experience can be accepted in lieu of Masters degree

Experience

A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience for Master's Degree, or seven years of relevant experience for Bachelors Degree.  Out of the relevant years of experience, three should irrigation management and agronomy.

Languages

Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
