Introduction

Presentation

The Institute of Geography and Sustainability (IGD) seeks to fill one position of Graduate Assistant in climatology, for a maximum period of 5 years. This position is linked to the "Water and Geoheritage" team, under the responsibility of Dr Jean-Michel Fallot.

The IGD is an interdisciplinary community of about 100 academics that work in the fields of Geography and Sustainability. With 15 professors and more than 40 PhD students, the department offers a vibrant, stimulating environment for cutting-edge research. It hosts regular lecture series and distinguished guest researchers from around the world.

Your responsibilities

The successful candidate will develop independant research leading to a PhD in the field of climatology. Her or his research topic should focus on topoclimatology, local climate or climate hazards in relation with climate change, if possible in the Vaud Alps or Lavaux region where climate field data are available. These regions are also study areas of the IGD, the Faculty of Geosciences and Environment (FGSE) and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mountain Research (ICMR) of UNIL.

The successful candidate should also ensure the proper functioning of the meteorological network installed in the Vaud Alps as part of the interdisciplinary research project of the ICMR. If necessary, she or he should define or complete this network for his own research.

The successful candidate will devote at least half of working time to her/his PhD research (40% for this position), with the remaining time reserved for supporting research and teaching of Dr Jean-Michel Fallot in the field of climatology as a graduate assistant.

Your qualifications

The successful candidate is expected to have earned a Master’s degree in natural sciences or geography along with strong knowledge in climatology. Good knowledge in computing science, statistics, geomatics, even modelling, would be an advantage.

The successful candidate is expected to be able to fluently read scientific literature in environmental sciences, especially in climatology, and help maintain up to date the scientific ground of the course in climatology at the Bachelor and Master level.

Communication and relational skills are required. French and English language proficiency is expected (French is the working language of the "Water and Geoheritage" group at IGD as well as the teaching language at UNIL).
