H/F: Geological and ecological factors determining cholera epidemics in the African Rift Valley via EURAXESS

Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS)

Besançon, France 🇫🇷

OFFER DESCRIPTION

The work is part of a collaboration between the CNRS chrono-Environment laboratory (Besançon), the Magmas and Volcanoes laboratory (Clermont Ferrand) and the infectious disease epidemiology laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo). The doctoral student will be supervised by researchers from these three units, due to the strong interdisciplinary nature of the project.

Cholera is a highly pathogenic bacillus that has been endemically affecting the populations of the African Rift since the 1970s. Despite significant progress on the role of volcano-tectonic activity and lakes, the question of the causalities of these outbreaks remains, however, particularly along the Lake Kivu-Rusiz River-Lake Tanganyika continuum. The project aims to investigate the geological (including geomorphological, hydrogeological, and volcano-tectonic activity) and ecological causalities of the temporal dynamics and spatial distribution of these outbreaks. The work will be based on the documentation of the volcano-tectonic characteristics of the area, and on the knowledge of the circulation and quality of surface water along the north-south and east-west continuum, depending on the time of year. This knowledge will be coupled with geolocalised epidemiological data to identify the factors at work in the emergence of epidemic outbreaks

Additional comments

le/la candidat-e devra avoir une bonne connaissance du contexte geopolitique et de sécurité de l’est de la RDC.
