The Department of Geography and Environment, College of Social Sciences (CSS, 0.50 FTE) and the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC, 0.50 FTE), University of Hawai’i at Manoa, invite applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure track, permanent appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, position numbers 84841 (CSS) and 88665 (WRRC), to begin Spring 2022 or Fall 2022, subject to position clearance and availability of funds. The units are seeking an individual with the capacity to conduct research, community outreach, and teaching addressing Hawai‘i’s most important water-related problems stemming from climate change, invasive species, shifting water needs, and increasing human population, using field methods, data analysis, and computer modeling techniques. The hire would incorporate both western and indigenous scientific knowledge systems to facilitate the preservation and protection of freshwater resources in support of the livelihoods and traditional practices of Native Hawaiians. The person hired for this position will work closely with stakeholders and develop a vigorous program of teaching, graduate student mentoring, and research based on external funding on issues relevant to ecohydrology.
Duties and Responsibilities: The faculty member will be expected to 1) develop a robust research agenda in the field of water and society in the Asia-Pacific region; 2) teach courses in the Department of Geography and Environment B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. curriculums and contribute to undergraduate curriculum development; supervise and mentor students; 3) seek extramural funding and publish research in peer-reviewed journals; 4) provide service to the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), the Department of Geography and Environment, the College of Social Sciences, and the University; and 5) conduct extension and outreach activities through the WRRC that enable communities in Hawai‘i to build knowledge of ecosystems, climate, and culture. Other duties as assigned by chair the Department of Geography and Environment and/or the director of the WRRC.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in geography or a closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing or foreign equivalent. ABDs will be considered as long as all degree requirements are met before January 1, 2022, for a spring 2022 hire or August 1, 2022, for a fall 2022 hire. ABDs must also submit a letter from their committee chair attesting that dissertation and all degree requirements will be completed prior to the date of hire. Demonstrated scholarly achievement in the field of water resources, with a strong focus on ecohydrology; demonstrated ability to effectively teach courses and mentor students.
Desirable Qualifications: Ability to work productively with colleagues, community organizations, and stakeholders in cooperative, cross-cultural, interdisciplinary endeavors; demonstrated record of peer-reviewed research; ability to generate extramural funding; and knowledge of Asia, Pacific, or Hawai‘i ecosystems, climate, and culture.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
