Job Description

The candidate will primarily work on an NSF-funded research project that seeks to understand the abiotic emission of carbon dioxide from irrigated farms in the arid regions (see https://waterdmd.info/projects/sits/). The incumbent is expected to strongly collaborate with PIs and students associated with the project at Texas A&M AgriLife Research-El Paso and the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP). The postdoctoral scholar will have the opportunity to mentor graduate and undergraduate students at AgriLife and UTEP, overseeing their research activities and assisting with their project development.

Responsibilities:

Anticipated responsibilities may include:

  • Aerial hyperspectral imaging and data analysis
  • Developing and testing novel CO2/GHG sensors
  • Integrating sensors with UAV and UGV
  • Developing and calibrating models for gas efflux from soil
  • Numerical modeling of water balance for Pecan and Cotton Orchards
  • Develop technical publications and research proposals based on this research

Occasional Duties:

  • Field data collection and compilation
  • Maintain field equipment
  • Collect water samples
  • Guide graduate/undergraduate student research
  • Assist in developing research proposals 
  • Other reasonable job-related duties that may arise later

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Computer competencies are required for this position. This includes knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, ENVI, or similar), and programming.
  • Strong service ethic and desire to work with all audiences in the assigned county, regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, disability, or national origin, is a must
  • The ability to communicate effectively is also necessary

 Other Requirements:

  • Travel connected with official duties may be required. This may include attendance at night and weekend meetings, participation in out-of-county events
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Driver’s license
  • Must be willing to work necessary hours to fulfill job responsibilities (some evenings and weekends).
  • Must reside in the assigned county (NOTE: Urban designed counties exempt from this requirement).

Required Education:

Ph.D. in engineering, water science, agriculture science, earth science, or related field  

Required Experience: 

Experience with field observation, data interpretation, numerical modeling, and analysis of hydrological processes. 

Preferred Experience: 

Experience working with aerial hyperspectral data, flying and managing UAS with FAA small aircraft pilot’s license (part 107 certified), developing machine learning models, and coding in python.

Other: 

  • Good communication skills.
  • Excellent technical writing skills.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships.
