Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational Setting and Background

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

This consultancy is managed by UNEP’s Science Division. The Science Division is responsible for analyzing the state of the global environment, providing early warning information and assessing global and regional environmental trends to catalyse and promote international cooperation and action on the environment.

UNEP’s Science Division is organizing regional Forums in Asia Pacific and Africa , as well as several other high level and special round table events in 2021/2 which will pull together at summit level, corporate leadership from the policy, science and business communities and other stakeholder groups
This work will fall under the Director’s Office, Science Division, and will include engagement with global science sectors and science-based organizations and will also look at opportunities to enhancing relationships with environmental groups and creating green investments.

The consultant will report to Head of the Science Policy Business Forum in the Office of the Director of the Science Division, UNEP. The consultant will be involved with organization of the regional Forums including stakeholder consultations, development of reporting and outreach products, and management of partner outreach. The consultant will also be involved with resource mobilization

Specific duties and responsibilities;

• Write and review the strategy document for fundraising, using different methodologies depending on the sectors approached and review the strategy document for a fundraising and resource mobilization event scheduled for January 2022.
• Put together a plan to ensure successful convening of the regional Forums in Asia Pacific, Africa and a separate plan for the Global Forum to be held during UNEA 5. This will include all partner relations, outreach and creation of related databases and profiles. Fully engage and participate in the convening of a successful regional forum.
• Develop and implement an engagement strategy to engage capital market players and the technology sector in the DEAL initiative under the Forum’s Working Group on Big Data

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications:
A first level degree in Economics and/or Environmental studies is required

Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience is required in the areas of event organization, resource mobilization and partnerships, project management, research and report writing, creating databases, engaging with partners in the private sector/Governments/International Organizations and Academia.
Desirable: Previous work experience with the UN or International Organizations

Language:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the consultancy, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
