Multiple M.S. & Ph.D. positions in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences via AGU

Cornell University

Ithaca, NY, USA 🇺🇸

We are seeking M.S. and Ph.D. students to work on the following projects to begin in the Fall of 2022 in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University.  Please contact the faculty listed below for more information.  Details on applying to Cornell are available here: https://gradschool.cornell.edu/admissions/

Experimental petrology/geochemistry: Prof. Megan Holycross ([email protected]) is seeking PhD students to work on the development of ‘crystal clocks’ for timing short-lived volcanic processes. Potential research projects will involve high-temperature experimentation and formation of numerical models for diffusion in crystalline systems.

Precipitation, extreme events, and climate change: Prof. Angeline Pendergrass ([email protected]) is seeking at least one PhD student to join her team working on the Earth’s hydrological cycle, climate dynamics, variability and change in the field of atmospheric sciences.

Low temperature geochemistry : Prof. Nicole Fernandez is seeking PhD students interested in isotope and trace element geochemistry, kinetics and thermodynamics of water-rock interactions, reactive transport modeling, chemical weathering and biogeochemical cycling within the Critical Zone.  Contact [email protected] for further information.

Mineral resources: One or two students for resource characterization, integrating mineral deposit geological data with operations and sustainable impacts, drillcore mineral and geochemistry models, mine waste characterization, and/or seafloor nodule geochemistry; please contact Prof Karin Olson Hoal ([email protected])

Geospace science: Prof. David Hysell ([email protected]) is seeking multiple students to work on theory and observations of phenomena in the upper atmosphere and ionosphere related to space weather. Projects will involve the use of large international facilities as well as instruments made in our lab together with numerical simulations and forecast models.

Seismology-geophysics: Prof. Geoff Abers ([email protected]) seeks students to join a group studying the structure and seismicity of subduction zones.
