| Position Highlights | The Department of Environmental Science (ENVS) is searching for an outstanding candidate to join our diverse and interdisciplinary faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will fill an exciting new research and teaching position focused on the interface of soil science, plant biology, global change, and sustainable above- and below-ground biomass production and carbon storage in relation to climate challenges and drought. We are particularly interested in candidates who characterize landscape structure and function at regional to global scales as affected by changing climate, with application to adaptation and mitigation measures. The incumbent will use an interdisciplinary field observatory, remote sensing, and/or modeling approach to predict, design, construct, restore, and/or sustainably manage soils and associated ecosystems in a way that meets the evolving needs of human society and the natural environment. Potential research focus areas include regional to global scale changes in soil carbon; eco-engineering of carbon sequestration; soil-plant-water-nutrient-amendment relations; design of resilient soil systems using integrated management; development of innovative technological tools (e.g., remote sensing and machine learning/artificial intelligence big data analytics) for assessing the sensitivity, sustainability, and mitigation potentials of soils and ecosystems. Outstanding opportunities exist for interaction with faculty, students, and staff in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), the Earth Dynamics Observatory, and the multidisciplinary School of Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES). Exceptional applicants with extensive prior experience may be considered for associate or full rank. The position is 60% research, 30% instruction, and 10% service. | Duties & Responsibilities | The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain a vibrant extramurally-funded research program that includes publishing and presenting research findings to the scientific community and relevant stakeholders, teaching both undergraduate and graduate level courses, and mentoring students in the laboratory and field. The candidate is expected to collaborate with faculty, researchers, and students from UA and other institutions to promote the mission and vision of making UA an international leader in the proactive management of soils for societal sustainability. The appointee will contribute to university service, and efforts to encourage diversity and participation of members of underrepresented groups in university activities. The appointee will help develop innovative approaches to expand collaborations with community and business partners.Develop a cutting-edge research program in soils and global change, seek funding from national and international sources that fund carbon cycle and global change research including but not limited to NSF, DoE, DoD, and USDA.Develop interdisciplinary activities within the ENVS Department, CALS, SEES, and national and international collaborators.Pursue latest pedagogical approaches and develop state-of-the-art learning materials for one undergraduate and one upper division/graduate course to be taught annually.Fieldwork or travel on university business will be required.Thorough understanding of standard and innovative methods for soil and ecosystem observation, sampling, big data analytics for data streams emanating from environmental observatories, and cutting-edge modeling techniques.Excellent written and oral communication skills. |
| Minimum Qualifications | The position requires a strong background in soil science, plant nutrition, geospatial analysis, or a closely related field, with demonstrated experience with current/advanced observational, experimental, data-analytical, and modeling techniques.Minimum Qualifications:Ph.D. in soil science, environmental science or a closely-related field. |
| Preferred Qualifications | • An exemplary record of leadership and extramural funding that shows high promise for advancing the field. • Experience with application of remote sensing methods for environmental assessment. • Teaching and student-mentoring experience in traditional or online classroom settings at a college or university level. |
