Job Description

The Division of Hydrologic Sciences of the Desert Research Institute (DRI) is seeking an Assistant Research Professor to conduct ice and lake sediment core, climate change, and atmospheric research in its Reno facility. The research involves NSF-funded projects in the Arctic and Antarctic that are related to documenting and understanding natural and anthropogenic changes in climate and climate forcing during recent years, decades, centuries, and millennia. 

The successful candidate will assist (and in some cases take the lead) in developing and applying new laboratory methods primarily based on sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SF-ICP-MS) for analyses of snow and ice cores.  The candidate will also be expected to participate in data analysis and in the interpretation and publication of the results.

DRI maintains a unique laboratory for trace and ultra-trace chemistry measurements including two Element2 SF-ICP-MS instruments. This research is highly interdisciplinary and the successful candidate will bring skills that will include expertise and interest in analytical chemistry.  In addition to research duties, the candidate will also pursue grant writing and proposal development activities. The research mostly will be based in Reno although personnel exchanges with collaborating partner laboratories in the U.S. and abroad are anticipated. Fieldwork also will be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in hydrology, chemistry, atmospheric or environmental science, or a related field (completed by August 2021) from an accredited institution.
  • Strong analytical chemistry background.
  • Experience with continuous flow analysis (CFA) systems.
  • Experience with operating and maintaining ICP-MS and/or SF-ICPMS instruments.
  • Experience with operating and maintaining a Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) instrument.
  • Experience in scientific programming and data analysis.
  • Excellent English-language communication skills (oral and written).
  • Ability to define, conduct, and externally fund high-quality research as part of an interdisciplinary, international research group.
  • Experience in writing successful NSF and other research proposals.
  • Experience in writing and publishing peer-reviewed articles.
  • Ability to pass physical/dental exams required for NSF-funded polar research.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing the Element2 SF-ICP-MS specifically.
  • Field and/or laboratory research experience in snow, ice, and/or atmospheric chemical measurements.

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability and willingness to occasionally work in the laboratory during non-standard hours while ice core and other analytical campaigns are ongoing. 
  • Ability and willingness to undertake fieldwork often in harsh alpine and polar setting, often for extended periods (weeks to months).

Compensation/Benefits

Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications.  Candidate will be hired at the track and rank that is comparable to candidate’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.
