An open position, each in the areas of:

  1. Mapping and Attribution of Wetland Methane Emissions 
  2. Remote Sensing based groundwater estimation

Opportunity#1: PhD in Mapping and Attribution of Wetland Methane Emissions 

Position duration : 3 years + 1 year of possible extension based on the performance

Project details:

The research will tap into fields of remote sensing, and water-carbon interaction (with a particular emphasis on methane variation). The recent sharp rise in methane concentrations may derail attempts to keep Earth’s temperature below the 1.5C increase enshrined in the Paris Agreement. The cause of the rise is unknown but a likely source is tropical wetlands. Lack of clear attribution stems from uncertainty in wetland extent and characteristics and methane emissions. Recent advances in remote sensing offer greatly increased detail and precision of both wetlands and methane concentrations. Combining these two data sets and advanced emission and atmospheric modelling will produce the first comprehensive data on tropical wetland emissions and their response to climate and management.

Your responsibilities

Most of the workload will be devoted to the PhD thesis. This will include:

  1. Conducting theoretical developments in the research field
  2. Programming and developing an algorithm
  3. Writing scientific journal articles and presentation of the research outcomes at national and international conferences.
  4. Fieldwork for the validation of each component of the model.

A smaller component of the workload (about 10%) will consist in assisting with teaching and research duties under the supervision of a professor.  

Your qualifications

The chosen candidate will have:

  1. A master’s degree in environmental science, geoinformatics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related domain. 
  2. A good base in applied mathematics and programming (R/MATLAB/Python).
  3. Demonstrated ability to write scientific reports/articles e.g. MSc thesis or publications.
  4. Knowledge in geo-statistics or machine learning and experience in handling remote sensing datasets are advantages.
  5. Excellent skills in written and oral English are required.

Opportunity #2: PhD in Remote Sensing based groundwater estimation

Project details:

The research will tap into fields of remote sensing, hydrology and statistics (with a particular emphasis on spatio-temporal variation). It is of paramount importance to keep the aquifers alive for India as this part of the world holds billions of people in a small area. This study proposes to integrate a suite of multi-sensor spaceborne observations from satellite gravimetry, altimetry, optical imageries, and microwave data to estimate groundwater (GW) variability and its impact in India. The study will cautiously assimilate different space-borne observations to deduce GW anomalies. The results will be validated by the groundwater withdrawal statistics data from Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and hydrological model outputs. The field study will be performed in the regions with extreme GW depletion, followed by their irrigation/ water use policy review to provide sustainable water management recommendations for the region.
