POSITION SUMMARY:The Research Coordinator serves as the lead scientist at the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve (Reserve), developing and directing an applied research program that works across scientific disciplines to advance knowledge and understanding of freshwater systems on the St. Louis River estuary and coastal Lake Superior. The current research program focuses on coastal wetland science including effective land and water protection, restoration science, impacts of and response to invasive species and regional climate impacts and mitigating strategies. Based at the headwaters of the Great Lakes, the Reserve provides an established waterfront analytical laboratory, well equipped on-site vessels and work vehicle, and the 16,697-acre living laboratory within Reserve boundaries.

The Research Coordinator collaborates with diverse partners and stakeholder groups including Indigenous people and local communities to identify shared research priorities in coastal wetlands and estuarine systems. They coordinate with the Reserve’s stewardship, monitoring, outreach and education programs and supervise and mentor research staff, fellows and interns. They may be expected to instruct in an undergraduate environmental science major at another institution on a bi-annual basis depending on funding and partnerships.

Based on the St. Louis River Estuary in Superior, WI, the Lake Superior Reserve is one of 29 reserves in the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provides federal leadership and guidance to the Reserve system. The Reserve is a part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension (Extension) and is supported through a network of innovative regional partnerships. The position is a part of the Division of Extension Natural Resources Institute. The Natural Resources Institute works at the crossroads of communities, natural resources and agriculture to empower individuals and communities to make informed decisions that benefit our shared natural resources.

The Reserve is in Superior, Wisconsin, an area with ample outdoor recreation opportunities, cultural and civic events, and innovative university and public-school options. The successful candidate will be part of a supportive and collaborative team that includes seven full-time staff and an equal or larger number of interns, graduate and undergraduate researchers and fellows annually.

DEGREE AND AREA OF SPECIALIZATION:PhD in a field that closely relates to the responsibilities of this position required.
1. Clear evidence of the ability to build effective relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity, especially Tribal Nations.
2. At least five years in a research leadership role including project planning, budget management, field work, statistical analysis and science communication.
3. Experience providing supervision and/or direct mentoring to undergraduate or graduate students, staff, fellows or technicians.

1. Record of success in developing collaborative and end-user driven applied research, and applying research results to land or water protection, management or restoration decisions
2. Training in or demonstrated knowledge of estuarine and wetland science and/or the ecological setting of Lake Superior and the Great Lakes.

4. Evidence of successful publication and presentations that help advance research
5. Strong interpersonal communication skills that promote positive and productive workplace and partner relationships
6. Experience designing and teaching undergraduate or graduate level courses
1. The primary accountability relationship for this position is the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve Director for supervision, compensation and benefits and performance reviews
2. This position’s primary programming focus is the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve – St. Louis River Estuary; some research may be conducted over a broader geographic area.
3. The home office location for this position is the Lake Superior Reserve office and research laboratory at 14 Marina Dr., Superior, Wisconsin 54880.
4. The Research Coordinator is expected to arrange for transportation adequate to meet position responsibilities and essential job functions. They will hold a valid driver’s license and complete a Vehicle Use Agreement to access University fleet vehicles for work-related travel needs.
5. Assume weekly local travel and occasional travel within the state and to regional and national events relating to the job responsibilities, with some overnight travel expected. Occasional travel to Madison, WI, is expected to coordinate with the Institute and UW-Madison partners as needed.
6. Must be able to move or work with others to move equipment up to 50 pounds, and navigate over uneven terrain outdoors or on boats, occasionally in cold, hot or wet conditions.
7.
