An exciting new vacancy for a Research Associate is now available as part of cutting-edge research on using citizen science-based data collection techniques to better understand water consumption patterns, water quality, and related public health outcomes among different socio-economic groups in Sub-Saharan Africa and thereby inform future water management policy-making. The activities will focus specifically on studying the link between water and health in the city of Accra, Ghana. The position is part of a large international consortium project funded by the UK Wellcome Trust entitled Pathways to Equitable Healthy Cities.
This is a fixed term appointment for 18 months.
Duties and responsibilities
You will be responsible for the design and implementation of a water consumption monitoring strategy (e.g., piped water, sachet water, other), as well as the collection and analysis of related water quality and health information. A combination of data collection approaches will be used, including smartphone applications, census data analyses, water sampling, and household questionnaires.
You will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals based on this work, and to attract external research funding.
The position will also involve coordination of technology development delivered by contractors (e.g., website developers), interdisciplinary collaboration within the consortium including medical and social sciences, and day-to-day scientific management of the projects.
You must have a PhD (or equivalent) in Environmental Engineering (or a closely related discipline), preferably with a focus on water supply system challenges in developing countries and citizen science-based research techniques for appointment at Research Associate level.
You will have previous experience in designing and implementing field-based water-related research in development settings, including data validation and visualisation techniques. Experience with the recruitment of citizen science volunteers and interacting with water sector stakeholders and policymakers will be an advantage.
