ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION

Desalination and wastewater reuse are acquiring increasing importance as countries around the world grapple with the challenge of water scarcity. Against this backdrop, the World Bank is embarking upon a review of the existing knowledge and experiences on the regulation and management of desalination and wastewater in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and beyond. First, the review will develop a comparative analysis of the legal and regulatory framework of desalination and reuse in MENA countries, benchmarking them against countries from other regions where desalination and reuse represent a significant share of the water mix. Second, the review will describe case studies of different institutional and management models, including in remote and poor communities. Finally, the review will synthesize best practice principles for the regulation of desalination and wastewater reuse.
