Stormwater and Water Sensitive Urban Design Engineer


Cape Town, South Africa

The successful candidate will join the Urban Water Team in Zutari and will be based in Cape Town, South Africa. He/she will be technically competent in urban stormwater and flood modelling, civil engineering design and preferably with experience of innovative solutions in water sensitive urban design (WSUD). He/she must have demonstrated knowledge and use of appropriate software applications. The position requires working collaboratively within multidisciplinary and culturally diverse teams. He/she will have excellent communication skills (verbal and written), will be able to work under pressure and consistently deliver work of outstanding quality. The candidate will demonstrate effective planning and time management skills, will be able to manage junior staff, will have strong inter-personal and networking skills and excellent project management skills. Familiarity with relevant quality management systems in a consulting environment will be an advantage. Short-term project visits to African countries might be required.

Key skills that would typically be required relate to:

  • Urban flood modelling and analysis

  • Open channel flow hydraulics

  • Engineering design of drainage systems

  • Stormwater masterplanning

  • Stakeholder engagement / facilitation of workshops

  • Preparation of proposals and technical reports

Additional advantageous skills include experience with other elements of the urban water cycle e.g. water conservation and demand management, non-revenue water, stormwater harvesting, and mitigation of climate change impacts and sustainability in an urban water environment. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate an awareness and aptitude to implement new digital technologies and tools, particularly relating to urban water management, the monitoring of stormwater, flood early warning systems and flood risk mapping.
