Postdoctoral research fellow in water quality modelling
The post forms part of the project AGRUM-DE “Agro-Environmental measures in Germany”, funded by the German Working Group on water issues of the Federal States (LAWA). AGRUM-DE is an exciting interdisciplinary project which quantifies water and nutrient fluxes for all German river systems. The post is designed to conduct coupled modelling of water and nutrient fluxes from the catchment, with special focus on urban systems as well as in-stream transport and retention processes. The effects of measures to reduce nutrient emissions and increase instream retention will be assessed and additional reduction needs to meet various legal requirements have to be quantified.
Qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in hydrology, ecology, geography or environmental modelling or a related field of environmental science. The successful candidate will be dynamic and motivated and have experience in the development and application of numerical models for various scales and environmental science contexts. The successful candidate should be experienced in combining process-based understanding with strong numerical / statistical / GIS skills. Experience with programming is essential. Expertise in developing and incorporating new model approaches into eco-hydrological models would be advantageous. Other favoured background includes experience in working in interdisciplinary research projects, and working well in a team environment. Strong English language skills both in oral and written communication are also required. Basic or better skills in German are advantageous.
The post is based at the Leibniz Institute in Berlin, Germany, but involves close collaboration with scientific project partners (FZJ and TI) and administrative partners of all Federal Environmental Ministries in Germany.
Duties and responsibilities
- Advanced analysis of environmental data
- Improving and further-developing existing in-stream retention approaches of the model MONERIS
- Applying, calibrating and assessing the model for German surface waters
- Dissemination of research findings through oral media and writing of research articles
- A PhD in hydrology, geography, ecology, environmental modelling or a relevant area of environmental science is required or in the process of submitting or correcting a PhD thesis
- Water quality and ecohydrological modelling – development of models
- Ability to think critically
- Ability to present complex scientific work in a range of media
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong English language oral and written communication skills required, basic or better skills in German advantageous
- Experience in environmental hydrology, ecohydrology and nutrient flux modelling
- A strong record of publication, commensurate with career stage, in internationally leading journals
- Experience with programming in Python, C#, R, GRASS GIS or other software development tools (essential)
- Demonstrable national/international recognition appropriate to career stage.
- An interest in hydro-environmental implications of climate change and river basin management (desirable)
- Experience in working in collaborative research activities, and working well in a team environment (desirable)
Salary is paid according to the TVöD (100% position). In keeping with the IGB's policy regarding gender equality, female applicants are particularly encouraged.
