The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), a collaboration between the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is seeking applications for a Research Scientist with programming experience to work in the Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL). Initially, the candidate will develop, test, and apply advanced statistical and machine learning methods to improve weather forecast guidance from global ensemble prediction systems. Over time, the chosen candidate may expand their research portfolio and may act as a mentor and leader in the application of statistics and machine learning to a variety of prediction and predictability challenges. This is a 2-year term position with the possibility of extension based on performance, initiative, and the availability of funds.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Develop state-of-the-science algorithms for the statistical postprocessing of ensemble forecast data for applications that may include hurricanes, severe weather, fire weather, or precipitation and hydrologic prediction. Methods you develop may include more standard parametric methods and advanced machine-learning methods.
- Test these methods to evaluate their skill and reliability across a range of weather and climate conditions.
- Pending successful demonstration of the algorithm(s), work with operational partners to ensure a successful transition of the technology to the National Weather Service for operational use.
- Communicate results effectively in the form of seminars, conference presentations, and journal articles.
- Work both independently and in a team environment with PSL, CIRES, NOAA, and other federal team members. Consult with subject-matter experts and report to lab leadership on results.
- Depending on the level at which the candidate is hired, s/he may be expected to lead other team members in related activities and participate in writing grant proposals to fund extension of their research beyond the two-year term.
- Post Covid, some travel may be required, at the expected level of 1-3 trips/year.
- Act as a resource for the team on issues in statistics and machine learning.
What You Should Know
- This is a 2-year term position with the possibility of extension based on performance, initiative, and the availability of funds.
- This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305. If you are the selected finalist you will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.
- This is not a remote position. The selected individual will be expected to live or relocate within commuting distance of our Boulder facility by the time when we resume in-person operations, which is expected to be later this fall.
What We Can Offer
- CIRES can offer a generous compensation package. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
- The annual hiring salary range for this position is $66,000 – $125,000.
- Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require
- Ph.D degree in atmospheric or hydrologic science or mathematics/applied mathematics/statistics/data science, or a similar relevant field.
- More than two years experience in the application of statistics or machine learning to the geophysical sciences.
What You Will Need
- The applicant should be able to speak and write English well.
- The applicant should have proven experience developing structured code in python, R, and/or UNIX scripting.
- The candidate must be able to both work independently and amicably in a team environment.
What We Would Like You To Have
- Experience with use of ensemble prediction data and other gridded geophysical data sets is strongly desired, as is experience with forecast verification.
- Experience with cloud computing and processing using cloud-data formats such as zarr is desirable but not required.
