We are seeking a Senior NFM Specialist / Senior Catchment Scientist (Civil Engineering / Environmental Engineering / Geography background) to play a pivotal role delivering a comprehensive and growing portfolio of impactful flood risk management projects both locally and internationally for clients such as the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and other risk management authorities.
Your base would preferably be from our office in Bristol or Cardiff, although your location is not critical as we work flexibly and collaboratively across the UK. With secured frameworks, we have a growing forward pipeline of opportunities with clients who share our passion for shaping a better world. You’ll help us deliver effective and professional services for various and high-profile clients on projects ranging from those on a local scale to those with National significance.
As a result of exciting and continued growth, and a significant programme of works emerging from frameworks with new clients, we are looking for Senior NFM Specialist / Senior Catchment Scientist to join our Water team. The successful applicant will form part of a team of environmental and ecological consultants, water engineers, river catchment scientists and digital specialists. The role will expose the candidate to a great variety of projects including major infrastructure, flood defence, river restoration and environmental enhancement projects. There are opportunities for international projects, should the candidate desire to explore.
As part of this role, the applicant will undertake feasibility assessments and will be developing outline and detailed designs for natural flood management, river restoration and fish passage schemes, working on environmental appraisal related to the water environment and flood risk, and advancing digital techniques across our water and environment business. As part of the team’s wider remit in ‘water’ within Arup, there will be opportunities to link with other engineering teams across the business to develop broader engineering skills and knowledge.
Candidates should have experience with the above type of work and be chartered. The applicant will also be encouraged to delve into research projects aiming to advance the capabilities of the team and wider business. As a team, we have very close links to universities and specialist consultants to ensure cutting edge thinking with diversity and breadth across our work. We expect the successful candidate to think beyond the ‘norm’ when developing solutions to ongoing engineering problems. For this we are looking for someone who will embrace new and emerging digital technologies and systems.
To perform successfully we are seeking a bright, enthusiastic individual with aspirations to shape a better world for people and nature.
To achieve in this role you will have…
Ideally a Masters in a Catchment Science / Civil engineering related degree, ideally to a Masters-level at 2:1 or above, although a BEng at 2:1 or above will also be considered. A PhD would be an advantage, particularly in Natural Flood Management.

- A desire to improve the environment and shape a better world and enthusiasm for a career in the FCERM sector underpinned by understanding our industry and work
- A proactive and organised approach and the ability to plan ahead to ensure deadlines are met
- Demonstrate a creative approach to problem-solving and seek to improve existing ways of working
