Position will primarily be as a groundwater modeler, based in Butte, Montana. Individual will conduct groundwater research as part of the MBMG Ground Water Investigations Program (GWIP). GWIP focuses on hydrogeologic issues important to communities across Montana.

As a team member, the candidate will develop and apply groundwater models to address applied questions in hydrogeology. Topics typically include investigating hydrologic systems as they relate to land-use change (for example, from irrigation to residential); stream depletion related to groundwater development; aquifer sustainability; and artificial recharge.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:

  • Developing work plans including the design of monitoring networks;
  • Collecting field data such as groundwater water levels, water chemistry, aquifer testing, well installation, and stream monitoring;
  • Data management;
  • Data analysis and interpretation;
  • Developing hydrogeologic conceptual models;
  • Independently constructing and calibrating numerical groundwater flow models;
  • Writing reports and publishing research results;
  • Presenting results at public and scientific meetings; and
  • Directing the work of other professionals, technicians, and students.

The person will share responsibility for timely completion of investigations, reports and publications. The hiring level will range from an Assistant to Associate Research Hydrogeologist dependent on qualifications and experience at the time of offer. This position is non-instructional. Employer sponsorship of work visas is not available.


  • Master or Doctorate degree in hydrogeology, geology, or closely related field;
  • Course work in numerical groundwater flow modeling;
  • GIS skills including project creation, geospatial data analysis and interpretation;
  • College level course work in geology;
  • Minimum requirements for hiring levels:
  • Assistant Research Hydrogeologist: Master’s Degree and 3 years relevant experience or Doctoral Degree
  • Associate Research Hydrogeologist: Master’s Degree and 8 years relevant experience or Doctoral Degree and 5 years’ experience


  • GIS skills including project creation, geospatial data analysis and interpretation;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated through reports and publications.


  • Groundwater project experience from design and data collection through interpretation and publication;
  • Demonstrated use of MODFLOW pre- and post-processing software;
  • Familiarity with modeling groundwater/surface-water interactions;
  • Familiarity with geochemical, surface water and watershed modeling;
  • Experience presenting to the public and to technical audiences.
