At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of The Built Environment in Aalborg a position as Associate Professor in Water and Environment is open for appointment from December 1, 2021 or soon thereafter. The position is opened within the Section of Marine and Environmental Engineering, which conducts research and teaching in marine and environmental engineering, water pollution, hydrology, and physical geography. The position is associated with the Urban Pollution Research Group


The research is within the area of microplastic studies, a topic on which three tenure staff, three postdocs, nine PhD students, two research assistants, and two technicians at the moment are working. The objective of the position is to further strengthen the department’s activities within analytical methods for its quantification as well as understanding sources, occurrence, and fate of microplastics in natural and man-made environments.

The candidate should have a background in chemistry and experience with analytical techniques such as µFTIR microscopy with hyperspectral image analysis, µRaman spectroscopy, and pyrolysis GC-MS. The candidate must have a strong background and proven record within the quantification of microplastics in various matrices covering large as well as small microplastics. The candidate must further have experience in managing large research projects on a day-to-day basis and a good academic record within microplastics research.

We have a modern and well-equipped chemical lab for various environmental studies. The equipment we use for microplastic analysis is Agilent’s flagship for micro‐FTIR imaging, two 620 FTIR microscopes combined with Cary 670 FTIR spectrometers, equipped with 128×128 pixel FPAs. We furthermore have a Frontier Lab pyrolyzer coupled to a GC-MS, a Renishaw Raman microscope and a wide suite of supporting equipment.

Teaching will primarily be in Engineering within water and environment and natural geography, but also in other study programmes at the University. The successful candidate must document relevant teaching experience for similar curricula

Qualification requirements 

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways. The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.
