Job description  Do you have a passion for our most precious and challenging resource?

If so, we’re looking for an Environment Planning Officer with great enthusiasm and strong desire to learn new technical skills to join our team.

This role is about understanding the amount of water available in the North East, the pressures that affect the available water and helping to ensure this is managed sustainably.

You will be able to gather, process and present data and information. This information will be used by environment planners and technical specialists to understand what water is available for use, how it is used and by who. The information will also be used to plan how we protect it in the future

You will be informing the decisions that allow water to be taken out of rivers and aquifers and inputting into our response to planning applications for new developments.

You will speak to internal and external customers as necessary. This isn’t a significant part of the role, but something that you will need to be comfortable doing.

As you develop , you will learn how to apply this information yourself and you will start to get involved in some more complex work areas.The team  We are the Integrated Environment Planning team based in North East Area. We look after Water Quality issues, River Basin Planning and Water Resources. We also work closely with other teams in the area, with national colleagues and with partner organisations.

We are an extremely supportive and inclusive team and you will be given the training and mentoring needed to do your role effectivelyExperience/skills required  We are looking for someone who is educated to degree level in an appropriate discipline (environmental science, geography etc), or can demonstrate at least 12 months relevant experience in a similar role

You are comfortable with data and handling and interpretation. You will have some database experience (Excel, access etc)

You are confident and curious and willing to ask questions when you don’t understand something. You will be willing to take the initiative with your work and learning.
You are a good communicator. You can talk to people at different levels (managers and team members). You can make technical information understandable and present it in different ways

You can work well in a team and you will understand the wider goals the Environment Agency

We expect candidates to have some experience of, or interest in, the water environment and natural processes.Contact and additional information  Due to the Coronavirus pandemic we are predominantly working from home, but we expect to be moving to a mixture of home and office work in the next few months
