Reporting to the Air and Watershed Resource Manager, this position determines if government standards and policies are protecting the quality of surface water resources and achieving desired environmental outcomes through its evaluation and reporting function, and works with the community, industry and all levels of government to ensure the protection and enhancement of surface water quality in the Red Deer – North Saskatchewan region.

The limnologist will represent the department, lead multi-stakeholder teams and programs, and provide technical guidance in a collaborative process that delivers information and shared outcomes that support the Department mandate to provide environmental assurance and manage cumulative effects. The limnologist also leads surface water quality investigations, specialized research, assessment and resource management programs from initiation through design and implementation phases to advance water quality management in the region.  This role provides review, guidance and recommendations to municipal and industrial approvals and compliance personnel tasked with implementing the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act to assure the protection of aquatic ecosystems.  


The minimum requirements for this role are a related Degree (Environmental Biology, Ecology, Aquatic Biology, etc.) plus 6 years of related experience OR a related diploma plus 8 years directly related experience.

Applicants must have the following:

  • Previous experience working with water quality guidelines
  • Previous experience working with provincial or federal regulatory authorities and industrial, municipal or non-government stakeholders
  • Minimum of 2 years previous project management experience
  • Working knowledge and experience with statistical software (SAS, R, Python, etc.)

Preference will be given to those who have the following assets:

  • Experience in development and implementation of  environmental management frameworks in Alberta
  • Working knowledge and experience working with impacts from industrial or municipal wastewater effluents
  • Previous experience working with GIS systems
  • Previous experience working on a technical advisory committee for policy development

$3,005.26  to $3,889.13  bi-weekly: ($78 437 to $101,506 annually)
